There is so much to explore and experience at Sovereign Hill this Autumn. Understanding our site and our visitors is what we do best, so check out three suggested itineraries we’ve put together to help plan your adventure of fun and discovery with your friends and family.


Itinerary 1. For active families

Transport yourself back to the gold rush with our hands-on activities and experiences.

Pan for gold
Will you strike it rich on our diggings? There’s only one way to find out!

Thousands of gold-seekers descended on the Ballarat goldfields in the 1850s looking for gold. Get your Gold Licence, grab a pan and head to the diggings to find some buried treasure of your own. Our friendly diggers are on hand to offer handy tips for gold-panning

Watch our confectioners
Join our confectionery demonstrations and see how our famous boiled sweets get made by hand. Don’t forget to grab your own jar of lollies - choose from over 20 flavours.

Where: Brown’s Confectionery Factory (Map ref. 27)
Cost: Demonstration Included in your Sovereign Hill ticket. Lollies can be purchased from our many stores


Make your own candle
Kids can create a candle like they did in the 1850s. Get hands-on with a rainbow kaleidoscope of colours. Lots of fun dipping candles in pots of colour.

Where: Hewett’s Candle Works (Map ref. 37)
Cost: Pay and book on site at Hewett’s Candle Works upon your arrival


Horse around
Before cars, bikes and public transport, there were horses. Lots of horses.

Horses were the only means of transport on the goldfields. Experience our horses in action and discover how they’re cared for by our expert team of horse handlers.

Where:
Get a coach ride at the Horse Bazaar (Map ref. 32)
Meet our horse team in the Stables (Map ref. 48)
Cost: Pay and book at the Horse Bazaar for coach rides upon your arrival. Demonstration in the Stables included in your Sovereign Hill ticket


Rope-making
Rope was a vital necessity on the goldfields. Have a go at making rope by hand just like they did in the 19th century.

Follow the gold trail

Follow the gold journey from discovery to wealth. Start by panning for gold, join a mine tour and experience the final journey as gold is melted into a $200,000 ingot bar.

Where: Start at the Diggings (map ref. 8), join tours at Red Hill Mine (map ref. 6) and Sovereign Quartz Mine (map ref. 35) and finish at the Gold Smelting Works (map ref. 28)
Cost: All part of your Sovereign Hill ticket except for Sovereign Quartz Mine Tour which can be booked at our Mine Hut. (Facemasks must be worn underground)

What was life like on the goldfields? Share a special experience with the kids and grandkids as you explore and discover goldfields life with our fun program of activities.

Become an Apprentice
Gold mining wasn’t the only way to get rich in Ballarat during the gold rush.

By becoming an apprentice, you were guaranteed ongoing work and wages, but which is the best trade to pick? Come along with our tour guide to find out!

Where: Carver & Dalton, daily at 3pm (Map ref. 10)

Join a mine tour
Travel 20 metres underground in our Sovereign Quartz Mine and experience the life of a miner.

Wind your way through our underground mine with our expert guide and hear stories of innovation, triumph and hardship.

Where: Sovereign Quartz Mine (Map ref. 35)
Cost: Adults $8.00 | Children $4.50 | Family $22.00 (Children four and under are free but must have a ticket)

New to Sovereign Hill? Or has it been a while since your last visit? Whether you’re a newbie or a returned visitor, experience the best of Sovereign Hill with these classic activities.

Our goldfields are brought to life by our many colourful, friendly costumed townsfolk. Chat with our residents and discover what life is like for them back in the 19th century.

You never know, you may meet a new friend or two!

Where: Everywhere (it’s hard to miss those giant crinolines!)

Experience golden magic
See $200,000 worth of pure gold smelted, poured and turned into a gold bar before your very eyes. It’s quite an incredible process.

If you’re nice to our goldsmiths, they may even let you hold the gold bar!
