Diggings Tour

Mine Tours

Journey through time into our underground mines and experience what life must have been like for an 1850s miner.

Please note that Mine Tours offer limited capacities. Bookings are essential, book your tour at the Mine Managers Hut upon arrival. Facemasks must be worn underground. 

Trapped
The New Australasian No. 2 Mine disaster at Creswick remains Australia's worst gold mine disasters. When the mine flooded, 27 men were trapped underground. This is the moving story of the heroic three-day battle to save them.

Journey through the Labyrinth of Gold
Learn about the dangers of 19th century hard rock mining. See the original workings and mining equipment while gaining an insight into the daily life of Ballarat's miners as they sought their fortunes deep below ground.

The Secret Chamber
The ghostly 'Secret Chamber' tells a tale of two Chinese miners who, like many of their countrymen, travelled to the Ballarat goldfields in search of their fortunes.

Red Hill Mine
Venture underground into our deep lead mine to witness the discovery of the fabulous 'Welcome Nugget' found in 1858, by a party of 22 brave Cornishmen. This is a free self-guided tour.

Gold Pour Demonstration
Experience the magic of $200,000 of pure gold smelted and poured before your eyes. Please visit the Gold Pour for bookings and further information.
When: Public demonstrations at 12.00pm, 2.30pm and 4.30pm
Additional demonstrations may run throughout the day and on weekends.

Meet the unique characters of the Sovereign Hill Wheelwrights, and watch in awe as they make a coach wheel from scratch.

Meet Sovereign Hill confectioners, and watch as they make our world-famous Raspberry Drops.

Activities and Street Performances

Make your own candle
Kids can create a candle like they did in the 1850s. Get hands-on with a rainbow kaleidoscope of colours. Lots of fun dipping candles in pots of colour.
When: Session run throughout the day. Book at the Candle Works upon your arrival.

Redcoats
See our Redcoat soldiers march, drill and fire their rifles.

Coach Rides
Sovereign Hill is the place to see rare 19th century trades and crafts. What better way to see the sights than from the comfort of a Coach Ride.

In this exclusive experience, our staff will dress you in beautiful Victorian costumes, while you, your friends and family pose for an authentic 1850’s style portrait.

Rope-making
Rope was a vital necessity on the goldfields. Have a go at making rope by hand just like they did in the 19th century.
